Monitoring sessions at the 4th World Water Forum in Mexico

April 14, 2006

The sessions “Monitoring and targeting drinking water supply and sanitation” and “Country Road Maps towards the MDGs” were very successful in Mexico! These sessions, involving several organizations such as WHO, UNICEF, WSP, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the World Water Council, indeed attracted a great number of participants, with standing room only. The presentations were mainly related to local actions and international monitoring initiatives like the Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP).

During the discussions, experts and participants stressed the importance of monitoring as a tool for governance and development. They also pointed out the need for developing and establishing monitoring systems for better water management and to trigger progress in achieving MDGs for Water Supply and Sanitation. For this, increased support must be given to local and national stakeholders in terms of raising awareness, capacity building and financing.

The final report on this mega-session on monitoring, currently in progress, will be available very soon on our site.

Several other sessions, especially those on Day 5 of the Forum, also discussed monitoring and stressed its importance in other sectors like risk management, environmental protection, public health, economy, etc.

In addition, the World Water Council also produced and distributed a booklet (in English) during the Forum on our "Water Monitoring Alliance." It is now available on the WMA website. Click here to download it.
The French and Spanish versions of the booklet will be available soon.
